Starting gently

Your first two weeks

The usual way to begin is to open twelve tabs, enter everything with a prize photo, and feel faintly swindled by Friday. Two weeks with a smaller brief works better. You are learning the furniture, not trying to win a kitchen.

Before you enter anything

Make one email address for sweepstakes, or at least a filter. Sponsors will write back, and so will a few lists you join on purpose. A separate address keeps the hobby from colonising the inbox you use for the bank.

Write down the details you always need: name, address, date of birth if you are willing to give it, and a phone number you do not mind using. A password manager, or a note you paste from, saves real irritation. Do not store card details in a random filler you do not trust.

Decide a money rule now, while you are still clear-eyed. A good beginner rule is no paid tickets for two weeks. Stamps are allowed if you like the mail-in ritual. You can revise it later on the raffles page. Revision is harder if you have already spent $40 because a car looked shiny.

Week one: three sources, not fifteen

Use the Prize Desk USA list, one newsletter you already like, and either a magazine you read or a brand you buy from. Each day, enter two or three promotions and no more. For each one, check who is running it, whether you would be pleased to win, when it closes, whether you are eligible, and how many times you may enter.

Bookmark anything you mean to come back to. On this site, that bookmark can live on Your desk, which stays in the browser and does not need an account. Write the name and closing date somewhere that is not your head. That note becomes the seed of the tracking habit.

Week two: one slower entry

Keep the short daily entries. Add one thing that asks you to write or photograph. Give it twenty minutes and a proper read of the brief. You are not doing this because beginners always win judged contests. You are doing it to feel the difference between a drawing and a piece a person will read.

Spend one session on a winners page, if the sponsor publishes one. Not to envy them. To see the scale of ordinary wins. Gift cards show up more often than houses. That recalibrates the hobby faster than any pep talk.

What to ignore for now

At the end of the fortnight, look at the note. If you entered most days and did not spend money you miss, you have started properly. Next is a routine that sticks.
